InSinkErator Evolution Garbage Disposers FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions on InSinkErator Evolution Garbage Disposers

Q: When I run water with my disposer, should I run hot or cold?
A: Always use cold water. Cold water allows food residue to be easily washed down the drain and should be left on 10 to 15 seconds after the waste is ground to ensure its dispersal. Cold water will also save on energy that would be consumed if it was heated.

Q: Can I put difficult food items like celery, potato peels, and bones down my garbage disposer?
A: Yes, you can. However, it is recommended that you avoid grinding large amounts of difficult food items at one time. You should feed the waste into the grind chamber slowly and in moderate amounts. Models with multiple grind stages are better equipped to handle difficult food items.

Q: Are there any food items I should not put down my disposer?
A: Yes, there are. Never pour grease or fat down any disposer or drain, as it can build up in pipes and cause drain blockages. Put grease in a jar or a can and dispose of it in the trash. Clam shells, oyster shells, lobster shells, and crab shells should not be put into a disposer either.

Q: Is a garbage disposer safe to use with a septic system?
A: Yes. Garbage disposers are typically safe to use on a properly sized and maintained septic system. In fact, some disposers are specifically designed for homes with septic systems. These disposers inject a special solution containing microorganisms into the grind chamber during the grinding process to help break down food waste in the septic tank.

Q: Can I use a disposer with a dishwasher?
A: Yes. Disposers can be directly connected to your dishwasher, enabling you to grind up solid food waste particles that are cleansed from your dishes. The food-waste particles are transferred through a hose that connects the dishwasher to the disposer. (Note: Be sure to thoroughly read your owner's manual about knocking out the dishwasher plug before installing this kind of disposer.)

Q: What if food waste has been accidentally left in the disposer and it smells?
A: Although there are commercial products on the market that help clean and freshen the disposer, the easiest way to keep it smelling fresh is to first grind several ice cubes to scour the grind chamber and shredder ring. You may then opt to quarter a lemon and grind it in your disposer to release the citrus scent.
